Oscar's Grind is a betting strategy used by gamblers on wagers where the outcome is evenly distributed between two results of equal value. It is an archetypal positive progression strategy. It is also called Hoyle's Press. In German and French it is often referred to as the Pluscoup Progression.

Sounds more like a lap dancing move than a gambling term, but Oscar’s Grind is indeed another betting system.

The Oscar part of the name comes from the system’s claimed inventor, a craps player who used to boast about his gambling successes to reporters. The Grind bit evolved by virtue of the fact that the system seeks to extract small gains from the casino over long periods of time.

It’s a progressive betting system where bets are increased following wins, (as distinct from a negative progression system like Martingale) and it is applied to even money bets, like roulette’s red/black, odd/even or high/low.

Employing Oscar’s Grind

The aim of the system is to give the player a single unit gain at the completion of a sequence of even money bets.

You start the sequence with a 1 unit bet, then follow these rules:

Loss rule: If a bet loses, next bet is the same amount.

Win rule: If a bet wins, next bet is increased by 1 unit.

Overriding rule: Never bet more than you need to produce a 1 unit win for the sequence. The overriding rule may mean that in certain cases after a win, the next bet remains the same, or is decreased.

Example of Oscar in action

For simplicity’s sake, our units are $1.

In this example the sequence is complete with a $1 net position, after the sixth bet.

The sixth bet also illustrates the overriding rule coming into play. Rather than increasing the bet to $3 following a win on bet number 5, the bet is limited to $2 as a win here ends the sequence with a $1 net position (and no more).

With your $1 gain banked you continue the grind, and begin the sequence again.

Does Oscar’s Grind guarantee a win every session?

I don’t profess to be an expert on this system. I’ve never actually used it playing roulette. Still, I can confidently say the answer to this question is an emphatic NO.

Why?

1. Common sense: If the answer were yes the name Oscar’s Grind would be far better known than it is. You’d know it from all those signs you’d walked past at casino entrances over the years, stating,

‘Players identified to be using Oscar’s Grind will asked to leave the casino immediately’

Seen any of these in your travels, either at traditional or online casinos?

2. Logic: More often than not you’ll complete your sequence and bank your single unit gain. There will be occasions, however unlikely, when the sequence is not completed and damage will be considerable.

Consider the below sequence, where your net position continues to drift further into the red as bet amounts are increasing.

3. Probability: The system doesn’t come up with a solution to that unfortunate roulette truth, that each outcome is an independent event with a house edge. No matter how you mix, match, increase, decrease or cycle your bet amounts this doesn’t change.

Oscar’s Grind is a progression strategy that focuses on increasing your bets based on positive outcomes when you wager. In Germany, the system is sometimes referred to as Hoyle’s Press, and in France, you will sometimes hear it called Pluscoup progression.

All of the terms refer to the same method of play, which is based on the concept of betting on the outside even money chances–the reds, the blacks, the lows, the highs, the odds and the evens (read more about the bets here).

This is similar to the best roulette system that we recommend everyone to try. More advanced players can also apply the system for other bets, such as playing on the dozens or on the streets.

You can wager any amount that you choose, provided that it suits your budget and meets the table minimums.

The Basic Idea Behind Oscar’s Grind

The driving idea behind Oscar’s Grind is that most players will go through periods of several wins in a row and periods of several losses in a row. Streaks are common, and as a result, you can follow the winning or losing trend to maximize the amount that you win and minimize the amount that you lose.

In other words, during periods of loss you bet low, and then as you begin to win, you increase the amount that you bet in order to try to make as much money as you can while the streak continues.

This method of betting allows you to lose less over time and also makes it possible to slowly increase your bets, unlike some other methods that require you to take big gambles when you start to win at the roulette.

Rules of Oscar’s Grind

Here are the basic rules of the grind:

1. If you win on your first bet, you win one unit and you restart with a new grind.

2. If you lose a bet, you always bet the same amount on the next spin.

3. If you win a bet, you would bet one more unit than the amount that you won on the next spin. The exception to this is if you need less to win one unit of profit. In this instance, you would only bet the amount needed to become profitable.

4. You continue to bet until you reach one unit of profit. Then, you begin to play again or quit playing roulette.

Take a look at this example for an illustration:

As you can see, with the last spin, you only needed to win 2 units in order to reach the profit goal of +1. Because of this, only 2 units were bet instead of 3.

Benefits and Drawbacks

To understand the benefits and drawbacks of Oscar’s Grind, examine these two examples, the first of which is positive and the second of which is negative.

In this example, there were 19 spins. During the course of play, you won only 6 times, and you lost 13 times. Still, in the end, you were able to make a profit even though you lost more times than you won.

This shows you how Oscar’s Grind can allow you to overcome even very long losing streaks. When you began to win, you were able to quickly make back the money that you lost.

With this example, you played 19 spins. You won eight times, and you lost 11 times. In the end, you are still behind by 8 systems. If you had used other systems like the Labouchere method, you would have been able to ultimately walk away with profit.

The reason why the system failed here was that the wins were spread out too much. You never once had a winning streak, so you were unable to recoup the money that you lost.

Oscar's Grind Betting Strategy

As mentioned above, it is possible to use Oscar’s Grind when you’re wagering on the dozens. In a scenario like this, you have the option to bet on one or two dozens.

Typically, it is best to play both dozens to maximize your chances of winning, but you will stand to lose more if you do not end up with a winning streak. For the example below, we’ll stick to one dozen for simplicity:

With this positive scenario, you spun 23 times, and won only 5 times. You lost many more times than you won, but you were still able to make a profit of 2 units. To win, you never once had to bet more than 4 units.

As you can see from the examples, Oscar’s Group is a simple positive progression system that works well whenever you are fortunate enough to end up in the midst of a winning streak.
