The explosive growth and acceptance of online gambling in the U.S. introduced countless new customers to casino games and sports betting.

Unibet provides a platform for sports betting, online casino, bingo and online poker to over 11 million customers in over 100 countries. Unibet is a part of Kindred Group–an online gambling operator which consists of 11 brands along with Maria Casino, Stan James, 32Red, and iGame.

But as these (largely) inexperienced iGaming players begin to explore options, the line between regulated and illegal sites can be a bit blurry.

As such, Conscious Gaming, the non-profit arm of GeoComply, has launched Bettor Safe. The national campaign aims to promote responsible gambling and educate players about the risks of betting with unregulated operators.

Bettor Safe focused on NJ and PA

Wednesday’s roll-out of Bettor Safe includes two state-specific sites for New Jersey and Pennsylvania players.

Seth Palansky, VP of corporate social responsibility & communications for Conscious Gaming, said Bettor Safe underscores a “commitment to consumer protection and safety by directly educating individuals about the risks of unregulated online betting.”

“This campaign comes at a pivotal moment when American sports fans are gearing up for the NCAA basketball tournament amid a pandemic that continues to push individuals online,” said Palansky. “Now more than ever we must educate consumers and equip them with the tools to make more informed decisions about online betting.”

Bettor Safe provides players information about where online gambling is legal and which sites are regulated. The campaign also provides local and national resources for responsible gambling.

The campaign includes a short informational video specific to the Garden State market.

Online gambling confusion

Currently, 15 states and Washington D.C. permit some form of legal online gambling.

While sports betting will be in the spotlight this month thanks to March Madness, several jurisdictions also offer online casinos and poker.

A recent survey published by the American Gaming Association found a bit of confusion about online betting. According to the AGA, 35% of individuals are unaware if online betting is legal in their states.

And many more are wagering on unregulated sites.

“The regulator community sees, firsthand, the risks that illegal gambling presents to consumers and state governments. We cannot cede the established rules and safeguards of regulated internet gaming to offshore websites that have zero accountability,” said the North American Gaming Regulators Association in a statement in support of Bettor Safe.

More online gambling education needed in NJ and PA

A recent survey of NJ and PA adults on their habits and attitudes towards online betting. And it revealed some gaps in public awareness:

  • More than 25% of those polled in NJ and more than 30% in PA are unaware if online betting is legal in their state or responded that it was not legal.
  • About 75% of New Jersey and Pennsylvania residents could not or are not sure if they could differentiate a legal betting site from an illegal website.
  • Among those surveyed who currently bet online, respondents (42% in both states) overwhelmingly cite “safety and security” as most important to them.

Conscious Gaming conducted the survey on behalf of the Bettor Safe campaign.

Problem Gambling Awareness in the U.S.

March also happens to be nationally recognized as Problem Gambling Awareness Month.

In New Jersey, the governor, state gaming regulators, and the Council on Compulsive Gambling of NJ formally acknowledge March as PGA Month annually.

“Problem Gambling: Have the Conversation” is the theme of this year’s campaign.

Gambling disorder has been classified by the American Psychiatric Association since 2013 as an addiction.

A little more on GeoComply, Conscious Gaming

GeoComply is a geolocation compliance company used by several online operators and gaming jurisdictions (including NJ). It ensures players are within legal boundaries to place a wager.

Conscious Gaming is the independent non-profit entity created by GeoComply to use technology to “propel social responsibility initiatives,” according to a company news release.

Bettor Safe is the latest effort from Conscious Gaming to aid consumers and promote responsible gaming. In September 2020, Conscious Gaming rolled out PlayPause. It is a fairly new responsible gaming and sports integrity tool to help the gaming industry manage self-exclusion and impermissible bettor programs.

Pennsylvania sportsbooks couldn’t have really asked for a better start to 2021.

December’s all-time handle was shattered by a record-breaking January handle of $615.3 million. Compared to November, sports betting handle was up 25%. Revenue for January hit $34 million.

Six months into the 2020/2021 fiscal year, sports betting handle in Pennsylvania has eclipsed $3.1 billion according to figures released by the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board. It has also already surpassed the total 2019/2020 fiscal year’s totals ($2.2 billion) in only six months.

It was a notable month for the state’s tax coffers as about $10.5 million in taxes was collected from sports betting revenue. It puts Pennsylvania’s total tax dollars collected since the start of sports betting in the state at over $111.7 million.

FanDuel again held the lead atop all of the state’s 12 online operators for handle. Their $220.7 million handle accounted for about 38% of all online wagers. FanDuel took back the top spot for revenue in January too, posting $14.3 million.

Top players in PA online sports betting January 2021

The NFL playoffs headlined a month with other offerings such as bowl games, the college football National Championship game, NBA and college basketball. FanDuel, in partnership with Valley Forge Casino, broke their December record ($207.6 million) for handle in January 2021 by taking $220.7 million in bets. It represents about a 25% increase in handle since November 2020.

DraftKings continues to hold tight to the No. 2 spot with $143.5 million in handle, up from $131 million last month. DraftKings, through its partnership with The Meadows, saw its revenue rise from $5.4 million last month to $7.7 million in January.

January was also BetMGM‘s first full month. The online sportsbook, through its partnership with Hollywood Casino Morgantown, had a handle of $39 million and $414,300 in revenue.

It was also a notable month for freebies as online operators doled out $15.3 million in promotional credits.

Online

Not included in the January figures was Pennsylvania’s $53.6 million Super Bowl LV handle. Bets on the big game increased 74% from last year.

New Jersey released its sports betting figures today and continues to flirt with the $1 billion mark for monthly handle. In January 2021, New Jersey’s handle was $958.7 million. Nevada has yet to release its numbers for the month. But if the trends from previous months hold, PA will rank third for total handle behind New Jersey and Nevada.

What about Barstool?

In December, Barstool online sportsbook experienced a surge in handle ($71.8 million) and revenue ($13.9 million). But the number that caused a double take was the 20% hold percentage. The hold for the other 11 sportsbooks last month was about 6%.

Barstool’s unheard of hold percentage caused an immediate reaction and many wondered what the next month would bring.

In January, Barstool’s handle was $65 million and its revenue was a little over $1 million with about a 4% win for the sportsbook. Across all of PA’s online operators, it was an average 7.8% hold.

When Penn National reported its Fourth Quarter results in mid-January, President and CEO Jay Snowden commented:

“Since launching in Pennsylvania last September, the Barstool Sportsbook app has registered over 72,000 customers in the state and has generated total handle of nearly $300 million, despite very limited external marketing spend.

“Trends in January thus far are encouraging. Visitation and length of play have improved, several of the properties that were forced to close in November and December have reopened, and our retail sportsbooks continue to positively impact both gaming and non-gaming revenues. We are continuing to see encouraging growth in the younger demographic tiers of our database, and we believe the roll-out of vaccinations will encourage more guests in all age segments of our database to return to our land-based facilities soon. Given the service enhancements and operational changes we have implemented, we stand to achieve meaningful EBITDAR growth as our volumes continue to approach previous levels.”
